Choosing a Mountain Bike

You'll no doubt already have an idea of the type of frame or mountain bike you're after. Mountain bikes fall in to a number of categories, such as cross country, downhill, freeride etc, so it's important to know which model of frame or bike is best suited to what you want to do with it. For example, some people think it's alright to do downhill on their hard tail cross country bike, it's only when the biks gets shaken to bits that they realise they should have bought a nice long travel full suspensioin bike that is well suited do downhill riding. On the other hand, you wouldn't want to be doing cross country on a heavier downhill bike, yes you could do it, but downhill bikes can be on the heavy side compared to a cross country racing bike, so whilst going down hills is alright, going uphill is a different matter.

If you're buying a bike solely for riding to work or riding on smoothe flat cycle paths or towpaths, you will be quite happy on a hard tail cross country bike, hybrid or even a road bike.
